JBL · Floorstander · c.1974–1979
The Jubal is a compact floorstander, about 24 inches tall with a smoked-glass top, built around a tweeter JBL had only used in professional sound systems before. That's the 077 ring radiator, fed through a die-cast aluminum horn with a clear acrylic dispersion element, and JBL claimed 130 degrees of horizontal dispersion at 15 kHz, wider than any other single directional tweeter. The 12-inch Alnico V woofer has a die-cast ring on its voice coil former, a patented-design idea that JBL said put mass at the coil instead of on the cone. A 5-inch midrange fills the gap, crossed at 1,000 and 6,500 Hz in a ported walnut cabinet. JBL's brochure was styled after Leonardo da Vinci's notebooks, with sepia sketches and mirror writing. It ran from about 1974 to 1979 as the L65, L65A and L65B.
With the grille off
Ask for a photo of every driver with the grilles off, on both speakers. They should match each other and this list.
The smoked-glass top and the acrylic dispersion element in the tweeter horn are the parts most easily lost or broken, and a pair missing either isn't complete. Ask whether the woofer surrounds are original or redone.
New to old speakers? How to check a used pair walks through every driver, the crossover and the cabinet.
We haven’t been through this model’s listings yet. Search eBay and run every listing through the checklist above. Ask for photos of both speakers with the grilles off and the serial labels on the back, and pass on any seller who won’t send them.
