Altec Lansing · Horn-loaded · c.1977 into the early 1980s
In 1976 Altec called the Model 19 the most sought-after full-size Altec system, built from the same components as the A7-8 Voice of the Theatre, and a studio monitor version went into recording studios. It's big, 39 inches tall, 30 wide and 143 pounds a speaker, with the horn in its own box on top of the woofer cabinet. The headline part was the 802-8G compression driver with Altec's patented Tangerine radial phase plug, on the 811B sectoral horn, over a 15-inch 416-8B woofer in a vented cabinet. Two knobs beside the woofer set the mids and highs. Some listings say it has a Mantaray horn, but that horn belonged to the Model 18 and later models. In 1982 Altec rated it at 100.5 dB for one watt at one meter.
With the grille off
Ask for a photo of every driver with the grilles off, on both speakers. They should match each other and this list.
Boxed, a Model 19 weighs about 166 pounds, over the roughly 150-pound parcel limit, so it moves by pickup or freight, and the horn box on top is the part most exposed. Check the two front controls for crackle and the driver labels against the original parts list.
New to old speakers? How to check a used pair walks through every driver, the crossover and the cabinet.
We haven’t been through this model’s listings yet. Search eBay and run every listing through the checklist above. Ask for photos of both speakers with the grilles off and the serial labels on the back, and pass on any seller who won’t send them.
