The M250 is two of Winslow Burhoe's EPI modules in one cabinet, so each speaker has two 8-inch woofers and two 1-inch inverted-dome tweeters, eight drivers to the pair. Burhoe designed speakers for particular spots in a room, and this one is a corner speaker. Its modules face outward on angled faces and are mounted upside down relative to each other. EPI's own model list calls it virtually identical to the M202 and gives it real walnut veneer with brass accents. A restorer who rebuilt a 1974 pair describes it as a stable 4-ohm load. Listings sometimes call it a 10-inch bookshelf speaker, which it isn't, so count the drivers and look at the cabinet shape in the photos before you buy.
With the grille off
Ask for a photo of every driver with the grilles off, on both speakers. They should match each other and this list.
Four drivers a side means more to check, every woofer surround and both tweeters on each speaker. One restorer found the level control troublesome and noisy, and the same pair had water damage on the bottom panel.
New to old speakers? How to check a used pair walks through every driver, the crossover and the cabinet.
We haven’t been through this model’s listings yet. Search eBay and run every listing through the checklist above. Ask for photos of both speakers with the grilles off and the serial labels on the back, and pass on any seller who won’t send them.
