Infinity · Floorstander · 1987–1988 (Kappa 8 A 1989–90)
The Kappa 8 is a four-way tower about 47 inches tall, with a 12-inch woofer whose graphite-fiber polypropylene cone sits on a cast frame, a 5-inch Polygraph mid-bass dome, a 3-inch PolyDome midrange and two EMIT-K planar tweeters, one on the front and one firing backward for a more natural spread of treble. The EMIT-K was Infinity's improved EMIT, with a film half the weight and push-pull neodymium magnets. The baffle has rounded edges to cut diffraction, and the sealed cabinet weighs 40 kilograms. The woofer's network was designed to draw current for flat response down low, which is why the real load sits far below the rated 4 ohms, and one reference puts it at 2 ohms by the IEC standard. It ran from 1987 to 1988, with the Kappa 8 A following in 1989 and 1990.
With the grille off
Ask for a photo of every driver with the grilles off, on both speakers. They should match each other and this list.
The low impedance is the big one. A weak receiver can overheat or shut down, so plan on a high-current amplifier. The rear EMIT-K is easy to miss in photos, so make sure it plays.
New to old speakers? How to check a used pair walks through every driver, the crossover and the cabinet.
We haven’t been through this model’s listings yet. Search eBay and run every listing through the checklist above. Ask for photos of both speakers with the grilles off and the serial labels on the back, and pass on any seller who won’t send them.
