Infinity · Floorstander · 1983–1986 (III A, then III B)
The Reference Standard line took ideas from Infinity's no-compromise IRS system and scaled them down, and the RS III is a tower about 48 inches tall from the range's 1983 to 1986 years. It's a three-way with two 10-inch polypropylene woofers, a polypropylene PolyDome midrange and an EMIT planar tweeter, rated at 4 ohms, in oak. It came in two versions, the III A of 1983 and 1984 and the III B of 1985 and 1986, and the III B's crossover changed during its run, from 1,100 and 4,400 Hz to 600 and 4,000 Hz. Some listings credit it with an EMIM planar midrange, but that belonged to bigger models like the RS II A. The German magazines Stereoplay and Audio reviewed the III A in 1985.
With the grille off
Ask for a photo of every driver with the grilles off, on both speakers. They should match each other and this list.
Check the EMIT first, since a dead planar tweeter changes the whole speaker. At 4 ohms it also needs an amplifier that's comfortable with a low load.
New to old speakers? How to check a used pair walks through every driver, the crossover and the cabinet.
We haven’t been through this model’s listings yet. Search eBay and run every listing through the checklist above. Ask for photos of both speakers with the grilles off and the serial labels on the back, and pass on any seller who won’t send them.
